Come the autumn, this will (if it’s a female) have grown into one of the lardger and commoner of the spiders seen around in gardens and outhouses, a cross spider or garden spider. In its juvenile springtime version, it was only a couple of millimeters across.

Coot chicks, Spring Pool, Baggeridge

Spring Pool, Baggeridge Country Park. A large coot chick on a nest not far from the shore, Preening. nearby, an adult coot is feeding water weed to a smaller coot chick. Smaller coot chick then swims over to the nest, climbs on to join the larger one, which then interrupts its preening and seems to be feeding the smaller chick as well.
