Heron on one of the favoured perches on the West Park lake, a fallen but still growing willow coming over the water from one of the islands. The water’s colour is because something has been added to prevent algal bloom.

A pellucid hoverfly (Volucella pellucens), one of the larger hoverflies. Normally a woodland species, but occasionally found in gardens. This one was on a leaf on a bay tree, where it might have slept overnight.

Cowberry redleaf fungus on an azalia
Cowboy redhead fungus (Exobasidium vaccinii) growing on an azalia in a front garden. A few of the reddened leaves on the azalia can be seen in the backgrounds.
UPDATE: more likely to be the related fungus, an Alpine rose apple (Exobasidium rhododendri).
