Mossy maze polypore (and bonus springtail)

Mossy maze polypore growing on one of the tree near the old Tettenall Station (Cupcak Lane) on the Railway Walk, seen from above, and from below showing the “maze” of pores where the spores are released.

The springtail on the upper surface and in the cropped version of the picture, is an Orchesella cincta.

Moorhen chicks, September

Moorhen chicks still not yet adult, late last month. There were two with a parent bird on the canal, by the lock at Compton. A little while later I noticed another two , on Old Nursery Pond. They were perhaps not quite as old, and again there was only one parent visible.

The “black” petunias in a tub outside one of the houses on East Castle Street, Bridgnorth. In contrast to their appearance on a previous visit to the town, here the underlying purple of the flowers was showing more strongly.

Sitting on the fence (common plume moth)

I don’t know how they fold their wings like that, but this is a common plume moth.

I disturbed it, as it was inconspicuously holed up for the day on my bike. It fluttered, only for a short distance, and landed on the top of a garden fence.
