This butterfly was feeding on the flowers in a thistle patch in Sutton Park back in the summer. I had walked most of the way round the park before I saw it, so I didn’t have the energy to wait for it to give me a fuller view of the wings, and so a better chance of working out the species.

Spectacular rainbow
At the end of November it came on to rain just before sunset was due. The result was the biggest and most spectacular rainbow I have ever seen. These pictures do not do it justice. Apart from being large, and practically a complete semi-circle, at its peak it was a triple bow. Apart from the brightest main bow, the colours appeared in reversed order just inside the main bow, and more faintly a little distance further out.
Boating lake island heron
A short video clip of one of the West Park herons which was featured yesterday, its long feathers moving in the wind as it stands staring at the boating lake.
