Red, gold and green: tulip

Red, gold and green: tulip

Tulip flower, petals drooping as they showed the signs of age. Flower and background giving a composition almost entirely using the Pan-African colours of red, gold and green. I noticed the flower in the Castle Grounds, Bridgnorth.

Coot chick on a submerged branch

Coot chick on a submerged branch

Coot chick, previously just about visible in a nest of tangled twigs, here having swum a couple of feet across the River Avon to take refuge on a submerged and fallen branch poking out of the water. In the short time I was taking these pictures, I didn’t see any sign of a parent bird.

Orange tip butterflies, Compton Rough

Orange tip butterflies, Compton Rough

Male and a female orange tip butterfly in flight close to each other over the Compton Rough flower patch. I thought they were going to mate. Instead, each of them settled on a flower and began eating nectar.

Orange tip butterfly, female, Compton Rough

Orange tip butterfly, female, Compton Rough

Female orange tip butterfly, on the same patch of Compton Rough flowers as this male. Females lack the orange patch on the upper wing which give the species its name, but the green camouflage patching of the underwing is similar in both sexes.
