Goosander drake floating downstream on Severn

Goosander drake floating downstream on Severn

More of the goosanders which seem to be staying as summer residents on the Severn at Bridgnorth. This drake was gently floating downsteam, carried by the powerful current. Taken minutes after these pictures of goosanders on the riverbank, the bird here is a different drake.

Male banded demoiselle on grass overhanging canal

Male banded demoiselle on grass overhanging canal

Male banded demoiselle damselfly which landed on a piece of grass overhanging the canal near Wightwick Mill Lock, then stayed there.

The vividly coloured males find posing perches, usually in sunlight near water, where they try to attract the attemtions of females. This was the only one I noticed a couple of days ago.

Female beautiful demoiselle, Worfe churchyard

Female beautiful demoiselle, Worfe churchyard

Female beautiful demoiselle damselfly which landed on grass in Worfe churchyard as I was passing. Females are less vividly coloured than the males, so are harder to spot when they are at rest.

It will have come from the River Worfe nearby, a big gathering spot for this species.
