Four cormorants mid-river in the Exe estuary, on a mud bank revealed by the low tide. Behind them, a group of black-headed gulls, and a lone redshank also present.

Darts Farm – a permanent farmers’ market including RSPB shop and one of the many RSPB reserves in the Exe estuary – has a field on the skyline planted in stripes of up-market varieties of cabbage and other brassicas. The reed-fringed pond of the public reserve is just over the ridge.

I don’t think it’s really fooling anyone, but it seemed the right day for this picture of a lichen-covered cock on the ridge of a roof.

Black-tailed godwits feeding in the soft mud of the Exe estuary towards low tide.

Ice formed at high tide on the Exe estuary, and left behind next to the river bank by the ebb. As the water slipped away, it left bubbles of air in profusion.

A small party of black-tailed godwits deciding they had worked out their current patch of estuary mud, and taking off to try their luck a little further towards the sea.
