Orchids last month in Baggeridge Country Park. I probably missed the peak of the season, but the main patch of spotted and southern marsh orchids seemed to be less densely covered than in recent years. On the other hand, they seemed to be cropping up further than previously in the Lidyates orchard.

Poppies with elaborate petals growing in a roadside garden on the edge or Worfield, attracting bees which were diving down to reach the nectar.
Four rapidly-maturing moorhen chicks on the shore of Bags Pool, Baggeridge Country Park. I couldn’t see what it was they were scavenging to eat.
Gatekeeper butterflies – these were on the lower slopes of Toposcope Hill in Baggeridge Country Park, and the Barley Field in the Smestow Valley Nature Reserve.
This year’s West Park cygnets feeding in the shady dining area provided by the branches of a weeping willow overhanging the boating lake.
