Windfalls and apples still ripening on one of the trees in the orchard at Anne Hathaway’s cottage at Shottery, just outside Stratford on Avon.

Just a few hundred yards further downstream, and the scene looks like one of rural tranquillity. There is actually a busy main road heading up the slope to the left of the picture.

Bright colours of autumn: red (for danger) yew berries and the tree’s evergreen leaves.

They were growing through sphagnum moss on damp ground.

Closer view of the heron which featured in the previous post. The neck looks too thin to support the head, let alone to swallow the kinds of prey the bird lives on.
