Spider’s web on the remains of an umbellifer seed-head. The remains of the morning dew have covered the web in tiny beads of water.

The main picture shows the bird taking off powerfully from a standing start (or a floating start) and heading back to dry off after its meal.

Although the bird came quite close, I couldn’t see any reaction by the fox from where I was standing.

A large section of the fur on its hind quarters looked like it had a bad case of the mange. Although the fox didn’t look distressed, it’s probably not very healthy.

Young swan twisting its neck to preen

Young swan, a bit big to be called a cygnet, twisting its flexible neck for an awkward spot of preening, and, with its parents, heading towards me in the hope of bread.

the family territory is on the canal between Castlecroft and Wightwick. The young bird is the sole survivor of a brood of three.
