Another one for the West Park species list yesterday. Three cormorants high on the bare branches of one of the trees on boating lake island. The wide-angled shot shows that one of the resident herons was standing on the railing directly below the cormorants.
Possibly young birds dispersing from the parental territory. If the branches directly below where they are perched are marked by their toilet habits, they may already have been here for some days.
Berries on a St John’s wort bush, these turning from red to black as they ripen.
Dragonfly landing on a barley stalk, and sunbathing at rest on barley stalks.
Perhaps the same species as the dragonfly featured yesterday – possibly even the same individual, as these pictures were taken on pretty much the direct opposite side of the river.
Recently-formed oak apple with a knobbly surface, growing on a sapling in the beer garden of the Combermere Arms, Chapel Ash.
Male migrant hawker dragonfly hanging from a dry umbellifer stem by the river just downstream of Stratford on Avon, warming itself in the morning sunshine. Although this one was by a river, it is a species which prefers still waters for breeding.
The last traces of green on the point of disappearing, the first suggestions of the red of the ripe fruit beginning to show on this cluster of rosehips.
