Bladderwrack seaweed witout its covering of water when the tide had receded. On the rocks next to the causeway to St Michael’s Mount it was competing with other seaweeds. On the stones of St Ives harbour it formed what looked from the distance like one continuous carpet.

Little egret fishing, showing its long plume. In Victorian times, the birds were hunted because these plumes were used to decorate ladies’ hats. In 1889 this provoked the founding of the Plumage League, ancestor of today’s RSPB.
