Greylags swimmimg by, icy lake

Three greylag geese swimming, just by the margin of the ice, on West Park lake. As they passed, first the lead bird, then all three stared at me.

Ice landscapes

Ice landscape

Uneven surface of the ice on West Park lake. I guess that some of the birds swam in these areas when the ice was beginning tom form, breaking it up. As it got colder, these fragments were (literally) frozen in place, leaving abstract landscape patterns in the surface.

Scarlet elf cup, Newbridge, revisit on a frosty morning

These small, bright fungi grow on dead wood, with the fruiting bodies appearing in the middle of winter.

A small pile of fallen wood at the side of the Railway Walk at Newbridge has supported some for several years now. In recent years the number of cups has been falling. Possibly the nutrient in the wood is being exhausted.
