Wintry canal scene

Directly above Compton lock, the mist was rising from the canal so strongly it looked like steam condensing over boiling water.

Wintry canal scene 1

Wintry canal scene

The first of three pictures taken by the Staffs and Worcs canal near Compton lock. There was a wood fire on this narrowboat, the smoke merging with the mist which was rising from the canal under the morning sun.

Frozen West Park lake and island

Frozen West Park lake and island

The smaller eastern section of the lake in West Park is always the first part to freeze over. This picture was taken ten days ago, when the ice was so thin that even the water birds seemed to be avoiding standing on it.

Canal wharf, Broad Street

Canal wharf, Broad Street

The canal wharf next to the British Waterways warehouse on Broad Street (the once and future Canal Club).

The wharf points directly at Wolverhampton (High Level) railway station; the most recent building on the station can be seen in the background.

Apparently the wharf follows the original line of the canal, which was re-routed when the railway came to Wolverhampton.
