A pellucid hoverfly (Volucella pellucens), one of the larger hoverflies. Normally a woodland species, but occasionally found in gardens. This one was on a leaf on a bay tree, where it might have slept overnight.

Cowberry redleaf fungus on an azalia

Cowboy redhead fungus (Exobasidium vaccinii) growing on an azalia in a front garden. A few of the reddened leaves on the azalia can be seen in the backgrounds.

UPDATE: more likely to be the related fungus, an Alpine rose apple (Exobasidium rhododendri).

Red admiral butterfly resting on a pile of wood chips by the side of the canal footpath near Aldersley Junction. Its wings were spread to catch as much sun as possible as it warmed itself up for the day.
