Coot chicks all over, West Park

Coot chicks all over, West Park

Each year, several sets of coot chicks are hatched from nests on West Park lake. Both parents spend quite some time feeding the chicks with vegetation brought up from underwater. Pictured here are chicks from three of the nests.

Hover fight

Hover fight

Three insects fighting (probably). I thought they were bees, but they are bee-mimicing hoverflies, possibly narcissus bulb flies (Merodon equestris).

They were circling round, flying at one another and retreating, an inch or two over the ground of the Barley Field.
