Little egret fishing, Exeter Quay

Little egret fishing, Exeter Quay

A little later on the same day we’d seen the cormorant fishing in the River Exe, we went back to the cafĂ© where we’d seen it to get lunch.

No cormorants nearby this time. Instead, a little egret was striding about in the water, leaning forward and tensed until it jerked its head forward. Most often, when its beak re-emerged from the water, it was holding a tiny fish which the bird then swallowed.

Cormorant fishing, Exeter Quay

Cormorant fishing, Exeter Quay

Sitting right by the edge of the River on Exeter Quay, when I noticed a cormorant fishing almost directly below me, very close. I don’t think it was coming up with something every time, but it was catching enough to keep on in the same area.

Another view across the River Clyst to a kingfisher perched above the weir. Once again, the first image is a cropped version of the full frame shot below.

The bird had only been there a short time when a man came along the same bank it was on, with a dog which was off the lead. The bird headed off for somewhere less disturbed.
