Little egret fishing, Exeter Quay

A little later on the same day we’d seen the cormorant fishing in the River Exe, we went back to the café where we’d seen it to get lunch.

No cormorants nearby this time. Instead, a little egret was striding about in the water, leaning forward and tensed until it jerked its head forward. Most often, when its beak re-emerged from the water, it was holding a tiny fish which the bird then swallowed.
