Swan sanctuary, Worcester

Swan sanctuary, Worcester

A section of the River Severn both sides of the road bridge in Worcester is designated a swan sanctuary. Its basically a stretch of water where fishing is banned to protect the large gathering of birds which hang around to be fed by people, and an arrangement where some local outlets (including the Cathedral shop) sell swan food which is better eating than the traditional stale bread.

Most of the birds there are young, some not yet adults, others not yet paired off. The gathering pictured was of perhaps the bigger half of the birds, taking a rest during a quiet time for passers-by.
