Work, rest and play (weathervanes)

Work - carpenter, Cambridge

Ornate bespoke weathervanes. The carpenter at work was on a building by a road leading out of Cambridge, some way from the college-dominated city centre. The fop examining antiques in the centre of Ross on Wye, quite likely on one of the numerous antique shops in the town. The bowls on the pavilion of the riverside bowling green in Stratford on Avon.

Sinister birds (sculptures)

Malvern Buzzards, Rosebank Gardens, Great Malvern

Assorted metal sculptures of birds which look sinister to me. The Malvern buzzards may be intended as an adult feeding a young bird. But as it catches the early morning sun it looks to me more like an all-out territorial dispute.

The swan on a roundabout at Stratford seems to be stretching itself to prove that it can break a man’s arm. I’ll leave you to decide for yourself about the final image, a “bird” near the river in Cologne.

Three herons, boating lake island, winter sun

Three herons, boating lake island, winter sun

Three herons on the West Park boating lake island, catching the winter sun. This meant they had to stand not far from each other, but they were doing the frequent heron trick of each ignoring the others.
