Marshy Doxey Marsh

Marshy Doxey Marsh

My handful of visits this winter to Doxey Marsh Nature Reserve on the outskirts of Stafford city centre have been less successful than usual.

Work on construction of a new access road to the city has made pedestrain access to the reserve a little more awkward. The monomonous thump of a pile driver boom out all across the site.

But worst has been the effects of this persistently wet winter. The entire site has become swampy, footpaths included. The view is one of desolation, though the background noise is of road building, mainline railway and busy motorway.

Listening for worms, mistle thrushes

Listening for worms, mistle thrushes

Pair of mistle thrushes with a territory near the West Park bandstand. Busy, as they often are, on the short grass, holding their heads to one side, listening for worms to catch.

Backklit bullrushes, i54

Bullrushes growing at the edge of one of the pools in the nature reserve at the back of the i54, last year’s seed backklit by a winter sun, still near the horizon at mid-morning.

Male blackbird in bushes by a footpath, looking round to check whether I was any threat.

The beak is dirty where the bird has been probing the soil for food.

Urban / rural: Sedgley Beacon views

Urban / rural: Sedgley Beacon views

Contrasting views from a footpath across Sedgley Beacon. Urban sights of Wolverhampton city centre and the housing estates, factories and warehouses of the Black Country. Facing more to the west, rural south Staffordshire and Shropshire, and the ghostly bulk of the Wrekin on the horizon.
