Cramp balls, coal fungus, King Alfred’s cakes: a distinctive fungus growing on dead and dying trees. These on a trunk, brought down in winter storms some years ago, being allowed to decay naturally on the edge of the wildflower area in Bantock Park.

Get their name from excavating their living quarters, preferring soil on south-facing slopes.

Male orange tip butterfly which visited almost every alkanet flower in garden before flying off to investigate other gardens nearby.

Usually a shy butterfly.

Only the males have the orange tips to the wings.
