Coot chicks, Spring Pool, Baggeridge

Spring Pool, Baggeridge Country Park. A large coot chick on a nest not far from the shore, Preening. nearby, an adult coot is feeding water weed to a smaller coot chick. Smaller coot chick then swims over to the nest, climbs on to join the larger one, which then interrupts its preening and seems to be feeding the smaller chick as well.

Hawthorn flowers, also known as may, cos that’s the month they shows. The cold and damp spring this year heant the flowers only started opening around the middle of the month.

The Bagot goats of Baggeridge Country Park, in their fenced-off area on the slopes of Toposcope Hill. The goats were brought in to keep the scrub under control.

Hedge garlic, jack by the hedge, garlic mustard: whatever it’s called, it’s having a good year in 2021, flowering by the side of hedges, fences and walls all over the place. These were on a plant almost in the shadow of Mecanno Bridge.

Mallard ducklings on Bag’s Pool, Baggeridge Country Park. By the middle of May they were already developing their adult plumage.

White water lily, red lily pads

Water lily pads on the surface of Old Nursery Pond, dark red because they were still pumped full of growth hormone. The hormone is already being re-absorbed. The leaves will have turned green well before the white flowers develop.
