Almost black: petunias, East Castle Street

Almost black: petunias, East Castle Street

Petunias in a tub in front of one of the houses in East Castle Street, Bridgnorth. They looked almost black. If anything, the purple tinge comes over more strongly in the photos than it did to me in the flesh.

Common darter posing by pool

Common darter posing by pool

Another day, another common darter dragonfly. Once again, it’s a male. The females aren’t as conspicuous. They don’t have bright red bodies, and they don’t spend their time posing, trying to attract the attentions of the opposite sex. This time, I had a more powerful lens with me. So I could get these pictures as it settled first one one spot then another by the pool in Compton Park.

Mellow fruitfulness: blackberries ripening

Mellow fruitfulness: blackberries ripening

Summer’s turning to autumn, fruits and berries are ripening. Blackberries seem to have had a good year. As I’ve been out and about, I’ve seen a few people gathering them, leaning over to brambles with a bulging bag in their hands.

Common darter, canalside, Compton

Common darter, canalside, Compton

Common darter dragonfly by the edge of the canal at Compton. The males (this is one) find a perching spot near water, usually highly visible so as to try to attract passing females. Then they stay on watch for other males trying to intrude on their territory, or for unwary smaller insects they can dart out and catch.

Willowherb in autumn

Willowherb in autumn

Tip of a rosebay willowherb earlier this month. Flowering now over, but the seeds not yet developed the feathery tails which will help carry them on the breeze to disperse, as “sugar stealers”.
