This hoverfly was obligingly taking long pauses on a leaf above a small pond.

The two tiny insects on this thistle flower have tails longer than their bodies.

Not spit, and nothing to do with cuckoos. Instead, it is a protective foam around the nymphs of frog-hoppers, which of course are not frogs, but insects.
