A pansy flower going over. Conveniently set at chest height in a pot on the top of the wall of the Dutch Garden at Bantock Park.

Heron taking off III

Heron taking off

This was the final picture in the sequence. Once again the image is cropped to convert what was originally landscape format into portrait format, to help the heron stand out more from the background. But that’s the only modification in post-production for this image.

Heron taking off II

Heron taking off

My first try at snapping the fight of the bird in the previous post was less than successful. My framing cut off the bird’s tail and feet, while filling most of the picture with the tops of trees (which have been cropped here). The camera’s meter was also fooled by the rapid change in light conditions, producing an image which would have been much too dark if I had not been able to introduce exposure compensation in post-processing.

Heron taking off I

Heron taking off

The heron seemed happy to carry on fishing from the reeds even though I was getting my camera out. But then someone started to come along the towpath from the other direction, so it decided to go – taking off just as I was ready for the first picture.

Umbellifer flowers and leaf

Umbellifer flowers

These pictures are of a fairly small umbellifer: it was little more than knee high.
