Rock exposure, Pendeford

Lichen and moss covered Bromsgrove Sandstone, aka Lower Keuper Sandstone, exposed on Wobaston Road, Pendeford.

This rock, rarely visible on the surface, is resistant to weathering, and underlies some of the higher ground to the west of Wolverhampton, including Tettenhall ridge.

Great crested grebe swimming up and down on Pool Hall water. It was making frequent unmelodious calls as it patrolled.

Scarlet elf-cups resting in moss

The bright red interior of the scarlet elf cup fungi contrasts with the green of the moss which was also growing on the pile of dead wood.

This was the fourth distinct patch of elf cups I’ve noticed this year in the Smestow Valley between Compton and the Ranger Station.
