Two views of the same flowering yellow flag iris. I just moved one pace between the two shots, but that was enough to make all the difference to the canal in the background.
First it is blue from reflected sky, then brown where the water was in shadow. The white blobs on the water are petals which had been brought down by heavy rain the previous night.

Canada goose with a pair of goslings, which had probably hatched within the last twenty four hours. When I went along the Birmingham Canal in the middle of last month, there was a stretch between Birmingham and Smethwick with a goose and goslings every couple of hundred yards.

It’s been a good year for ducklings, goslings, and coot and moorhen chicks, so lots more pictures of these young birds to come.
These ducklings, already well grown, were in the canal, almost in the shadow of the Stafford Road railway viaduct.
