Looking into the Dell, a former sandstone quarry at the back of Wightwick Mill Lock. The sun was quickly burning off the early morning autumn mist.

Blackening waxcaps are strongly coloured, like many wacaps. They start off yellow, orange or reddish before turning black.

They often seem to be an inch or less high. These were taller.

Some of West Park’s greylag geese looking for food under the fallen leaves. There were eleven birds in the feeding group – the flock is growing as a result of breeding successes in the last couple of years.

The warm and damp weather in the middle of October produced a rush of mushrooms. Bonnet mycenae like this have been all along the hedge by the canal towpath from Commpton to Castlecroft and beyond.

Several ladybirds were gathered in a series of small groups on the moss on the top of a garden wall or on the brickwork below. Most of the groups seemed to include both adults and larvae.
