Young heron in the stream carrying cleaned water from the Barnhurst Farm sewage works, just along from Autherley Junction. The bird was hunting with great concentration.

Fairiesbonnets are small inkcap mushrooms which grow in tightly packed clusters, here at the base of a tree by the Smestow Valley Railway Walk.

They look like berries

Yew “berries” are actually modified cones containing a single seed (0ne can be seen peeping out in this picture) covered by a fleshy aril.

The bright red of the aril as the seed ripens contrasts with the continuing green of the leaves as autumn sets in.

Male pheasant, its tiny head just big enough for an escape strategy of flying away slowly and noisily to make a perfect target for a shotgun.
