Bee holes in a river bank

Bees kept going into and coming out of these holes in sandy soil on the bak of the Severn near Bridgnorth, though they proved to camera shy to be pictured by the entrances.

Hawthorn flowers, known as may for the month they traditionally appear. Earlier today I noticed plenty of buds and the first few fully open flowers on hedgerow bushes in sheltered spots in south Shropshire.

Canada geese pair bonding

This pair of Canada geese on Tillington Pool on Doxey Marshes were swimming up and down side by side engaged in an elegant aquatic ballet. Turning their heads to the left or right in sync, or lowering and stretching their necks parallel with the water, again in sync.

Pair of great crested grebes on Doxey Marsh’s Boundary Flash.

They would swim in parallel, some distance apart, then gradually come closer together. They would now swim in parallel, close together. Sometimes they would put their heads close together. One or other (or both) would dip their heads under the water, though they did not bring up any weed to present to the other bird. After a little while they moved further apart, and began to repeat the cycle.
