Speckled wood butterfly contest

Speckled wood butterfly contest

Male speckled wood butterflies claim a patch of sunlit territory in a shady area, ideally a woodland clearing, and wait for a female they can show off too.

If another male arrives instead, a contest starts with the two insects flying around each other in a threatening manner, until one (usually the interloper) retreats leaving the other in possession.
