Flowers on a roadside apple tree when they were just on the point of opening (late April). Although the tree was growing well away from any orchards or gardens, it looked like a cultivated variety.

Tree stump at Pendeford Mill, carved to remember a face. Later growths of bracket fungi decorating the eyes, nose and mouth. The fungus may have caused the original weakness which led to the tree being felled.

Waiting for rough winds

May (hawthorn) buds which probably were subjected to the rough winds referred to in Shakespeare’s sonnet before they opened. I actually saw these just before the end of last month.
