Striking flower seen recently growing in a public gardens near the river front in the south Devon town of Dartmouth. If the identification as a coneflower is correct, the plant originates in north America.

A recently-emerged lawyer’s wig or shaggy inkcap mushroom, growing under a horse chestnut tree on the patch of land in front of the former Customs and Excise Offices (now flats) on Tettenhall Road.

One of three cormorants which spent about a month on one of the islands on West Park lake, as already featured here.

I’ve seen No sign of them on several visits over the last couple of days. Early this morning a carrion crow had established nitself on the preferred lookout spot.

Heron and a swan studiously looking away from each other as they both found food near the mouth of the River Dart estuary in south Devon.

Blue-tailed damselfly, perching

One individual blue-tailed damselfly perching on two different pieces of vegetation on the Compton Park pool earlier this month. There were a few others around, but flying and landing further from the footbridge.

It’s a male (the females don’t have the blue tail) and may be of the reddish sub-species, Ischnura elegans rufescens.

Rose and guelder rose, intertwined, fruiting

xAt the back of Compton Lock, a rose bush and a guelder rose (vibernum) are growing with their branches intertwined. So their respective fruit have been juxtaposed as they ripen. The second picture is one bunch from the same vibernum bush alone.

Guelder rose berries
