For some time I’ve been on the look out for scarlet elf cup fungi in places I’ve seen them before. They grow on dead wood, with the fruiting bodies appearing in winter – usually December or January.
This year I didn’t spot any until the middle of March. There seem to be fewer of them that in previous years, but the cups seem to be growing larger than usual to compensate.
The lone female muscovy duck by the lake at West Park. The morning light was bringing out the green irridescence of the feathers on her back. The feathers are black in flatter lighting.

Song thrushes are normally timid. But this bird’s territory includes the some of the busiest parts of Northycote Farm, and it may have realised it was separated from me by a fence, so it didn’t seem concerned.
Trees and other flotsam brought down the river by continuing high waters have been accumulating trapped on one of the piers of Bridgnorth bridge, forming a small temporary island.
It gave a suitable perch for this grey wagtail to watch the river, safe from human disturbance.
