Togetherness: common blue damselflies mating

Togetherness: common blue damselflies mating

Common blue damselflies mating, resting on a leaf, then flying together. This pair were at the new pond in Compton Park last August. Although the pool has only been there a couple of years, it has already attracted several types of damselflies. Common blue damselflies have indeed been the commonest.

Peeping through: collared earth stars

Peeping through: collared earth star

I’ve not been out much recently because of health problems. Instead I have been looking back at some of the pictures I never got round to posting at the time they were taken.

Earth stars are a group of fungi which show up in winter, usually peeping through the vegetation under hedgerows.

Crow on flotsam island

Crow on flotsam island

Goosander fishing, afloat

Goosander fishing, afloat

Goosander drake, almost certainly the same bird seen in the previous post. These pictures, taken half an hour later that the others, show the bird as it was swimming quickly downstream on the Severn, frequently diving for fish as it went.

Goosander resting, ashore

Goosander resting, ashore

Goosander drake, resting on the gravel beach at the tip of the Bylet by Low Town bridge at Bridgnorth. A lone bird, which was quite likely having a short rest on its spring migration.
