River Severn and crumbling sandstone cliff

River Severn and crumbling sandstone cliff

Unstable sandstone cliff cut by the Severn just upstream of Bridgnorth, seen from a footpath across the river. Much of the rock face has been covered in stout metal netting to stop any rock pieces which break off from crashing down on the busy main road which runs between the cliff and the river.

Young heron in a sunny patch

16_02_24-32

The young heron which was still hanging out on the West Park islands when all the other birds have headed off to the heronry for the breeding season, this time standing by the water’s edge to catch the warmth of the morning sun.

I’ve not seen any signs of it in several visits this past week.

Flotsam mini-torrent, Bridgnorth bridge

Flotsam mini-torrent, Bridgnorth bridge

High waters in the Severn had brought down at least one tree which had ended up stuck against one of the piers of the older bridge at Bridgnorth. The accumulated mass of flotsam was enough of an obstacle to the powerful current to make a small, temporary waterfall.
