A pig, a wolf a deer and a ram join the usual lion in this selection of doorknockers.

A change of pace for Christmas Day: collections of pictures of doorknockers, mostly portraying creatures or plants. Lions heads, invariably male and shown full face, are very popular.

Christmas is coming. So, a robin to be seasonal. A distinct absence of snow or holly berries though. This bird was hopping round the posts on the fence protecting the Bantock Park Pond, back in the spring of 2104.

The bright red and green spiky fronds of a robin’s pincushion gall, a growth caused when a wasp lays its eggs in a rose bush – this one was on a bush in the Barley Field.

One of the little grebes which take up winter territories, dividing the canal from Aldersely to Wightwick between them. This one was at Compton, patrolling the water where the Boots Land Allotments meet the canal.

Dead man’s fingers, fungi with a ghoulish name, grow on dead wood – often, as here, on fallen tree trunks. Another of the wide variety of fungus species encouraged by the Woodland Trust management of the wood at Himley Plantation.
