Pair of adult swans and their by then well-grown cygnets, all preening on a muddy section of the river bank at Stratford on Avon.

Some gentle views for the New Year.

The River Avon at Bidford is crossed by a narrow ancient bridge which still takes heavy traffic.

It was recently damaged by a vehicle crashing into its parapet, and had to be repaired at great expense. Where it features in this set, it has been restored to its former integrity.

Swan on the bank of the Avon at Stratford. It wasn’t actually trying to hide its head under a wing – it was contorting its flexible neck to preen some awkwardly located feathers.

Ear fungi, gelatinous after recent rain, growing on a fallen tree trunk in Himley Plantation.

This fungus can be found at any time of year, but becomes more visible in winter when the woods are bare. It can survive being frozen solid and then thawed out again.

Some bright winter colour. Mahonia flowering on the bushes planted along the footpath in the carpark at the Molineux Asda.

Mass of pyrocanthus berries on a shrub growing by the canal towpath at Compton. The berries are more often bright red, but this bush’s variety was golden dome.
