Butterfly in an insalubrious spot

Holly blue butterflies have upper wings which are a beautiful blue, but such a fluttery flight that I have never been able to grab a picture of one in the air.

When they land, they fold their wings, only the less vivid underwings are visible.

There’s an area of canal towpath near Compton, evidently directly under a tree used as a perch by birds, where every spring the butterflies seem to feed or to get moisture from the same insalubrious source.
