I don’t know what kind of insect this was. Whenever I’ve seen them in the past, it has been near farmland – specifically, close to fields where rape is flowering.
This time, there were a lot of them in the Smestow Valley LNR. This one stayed still long enough for me to grab its picture.
These small plants were all growing from the mortar in the same brick wall.
This single flower was growing some way down a steep slope on the Cotwall End LNR. If it was descended from a garden flower, it must have travelled some considerable distance.
Growing by a hedge a few days ago.
The plant was among the vegetation growing overhanging the Staffs & Worcs canal.
Caught at the stage where the top of the plant looks like an elaborate crozier.
It wasn’t possible to move in for a close-up: these plants were in one of the fenced-off beds under trees in West Park.
The grey and yellow lichens were so closely intertwined they almost seemed to be growing on each other.
When the buttercups begin to flower, I usually think spring is starting to give way to summer. With the weather this year, I am not so sure.
I liked the pattern made by the flowers.
Much larger flowers than the wild variety (fruit too, later on).
This particular clump of St George’s mushroom were growing on a grassy bank, so I could get pictures showing the underside of the caps in situ without needing to lie down in the wet grass.
