Late July: further up this woody nightshade there were still plenty of flowers, if rather bedraggled. But these berries were ripening quickly.

The fruits look like tomatoes, but their stems are very like an eggplants. A close family those nightshades.

The fruit also look like potato fruit when they are allowed to develop – the flowers are also similar enough that the kinship is clear.

It’s understandable why the New World vegetables were treated with suspicion when they were first introduced to Europe.
